Speech and Debate is a nationally recognized organization that empowers youth through competitive speech and debate activities. Through the use of four types of debate styles and eleven types of speech styles, students compete in academic challenges from a multitude of topics. Speech and Debate offers students the opportunity to develop essential skills in public speaking, logical reasoning and peer-to-peer collaboration. Tempe Preparatory Academy maintains a rich tradition of Speech and Debate success, boasting eight State Championships.
High School Speech and Debate
The High School Speech and Debate season begins in August with practices every Monday from 3:30 – 5 p.m. and every Wednesday from 3:00 – 5 p.m. in Room 404. Additional meetings for Speech and Debate are periodically scheduled before major tournaments. Practice consists of both small group speech planning and one-on-one coaching. The Speech and Debate team’s first tournament takes place in September with regular tournaments scheduled through March.
The Speech and Debate team is facilitated by Mr. John Wolnisty. Students interested in Speech and Debate team are required to complete an Off-Campus form, Emergency Contact for, Drivers Permission form and Judge Bond form, as well as pay the annual $275 participation fee. Students are also required to dress in business attire when competing in Speech and Debate tournaments.
Students interested in Speech and Debate are not required to audition for the team and should contact the club’s sponsor for more information.
